Model Monthly -March Normand Hector
I have been working with Normand Hector, owner and modeling coach of NWH Modeling and Fashion shows, for almost 8 years now. When I first started with Normand we were working out of a gym at a community center with only 4-5 students. Today Normand has a class compliment of approximately 40 students per session and he is now also the president of the newly founded Saint John Fashion Council. Normand and I got together for a small photo shoot and short interview this weekend and here are the results.
How long have you been involved in the fashion industry in Saint John?
I have been doing this for about 20 years now.
What made you want to get involved with fashion?
I’ve always loved fashion and I’ve always had a love of clothes. I always thought that making sure that I was dresses appropriately and with pride when I went out helped with your self-esteem. I think it stems from watching my mother. She was a style icon to me and I watched her, she always made sure she looked nothing less than perfect, her hair was perfect, her clothes were, her shoes were perfect so I guess I got it from my mother.
But why modeling and fashion shows in Saint John?
I think that Saint John has been left out when it comes to fashion. It took a lot of guts to start something like this. We have a lot of beautiful and talented people in our city. So I thought to myself, lets take these beautiful people , these talented people and put them up on a runway and let them experience what it is like to be a model.
Have you done any modeling yourself, outside of coaching?
I have done modeling myself. I modeled for Le Chateau back in the late 1980’s or maybe early 1980’s, back when Le Chateau was in Market Square. They had fashion shows in the atrium and I modeled for them in their shows.
What do you like the most about coaching the next generation of models with your classes?
I love watching them evolve and I love watching the change happen. When they begin they are confused and unsure of themselves and in the dark about what they should be doing up on the runway. I love watching them change and I love giving them the proper information about modeling. Such as you don’t need to be a size 2, you need to eat and you need to eat healthy and finally that you don’t have to look perfect all the time and you don’t need to be perfect all time. You just need to get up there and have fun. Modeling should be about self confidence, if your self-confidence is strong your beauty will shine through.
What are your aspirations for the future?
My ultimate dream, if I was to tape into it, would be to have my own location, with my own place to have my own runway shows in the heart of uptown. I would love to have my own place where people would come on a regular basis to see runway shows. I would like to have my own runway, office, staging, backdrops for different shows. I have a great location right now with the hotel but it would be ideal to have my own place.
So you would love to do this full-time then?
Yes absolutely! That would be my dream. I would love to have 3 big shows each year, huge shows. As well as have more classes and let the girls practice on the actual stage. It would be an amazing dream.
